In late July 2021, we set off for a two-day visit to San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica, a hidden gem nestled in the Talamanca Mountains. Despite the rainy season’s frequent mist and showers, our journey was filled with serene moments and stunning natural sights.

Arrival and Evening Adventures

After an enriching visit to Los Quetzales National Park, renowned for its rich biodiversity and the elusive resplendent quetzal, we arrived at Cabinas San Gerardo (Anna's Place) around 6 PM. Nestled in the cool, cloudy mountain area, this charming lodge provided a perfect retreat amidst nature's splendor. The cool climate added to the allure of our cozy accommodations.

That evening, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at Anna's restaurant. The meal was exceptional, featuring some of the best flavors we experienced in Costa Rica. Closer to 10 PM, we ventured to a nearby local pizza place. This spontaneous outing turned into another great culinary experience, with delicious pizza and drinks providing a perfect end to our first night.

Morning Bird-Watching and the Local Trail

The following morning began with an included breakfast at Anna's restaurant, which offered more than just a meal; it was a captivating bird-watching experience. The restaurant, facing a vibrant fruity garden, attracted numerous local birds. As we enjoyed our breakfast, we were treated to sightings of hummingbirds, an emerald toucanet, and many other avian visitors. Although we missed the famous quetzal, which appeared after our departure, Anna kindly informed us, knowing how eager we were to spot this majestic bird.

After breakfast, we set out to explore one of the nearby trails, known for the potential to spot tapirs. Although we didn’t encounter any tapirs, the trail itself was a highlight. The lush greenery, with plants growing over other plants, created a unique and mesmerizing ecosystem. The beauty and tranquility of the trail made the hike an unforgettable experience.

The Hidden Gem

One of the most appealing aspects of San Gerardo de Dota during our visit was its relative obscurity. The area wasn’t widely known, which added to its charm and tranquility. The lack of crowds allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and serenity of the cloud forest.

Final Thoughts

San Gerardo de Dota is a bird and plant paradise, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of more touristy destinations. Our two-day visit was not nearly enough to fully appreciate everything this enchanting place has to offer. From the warm hospitality at Cabinas San Gerardo to the unforgettable bird-watching and breathtaking trails, our time in San Gerardo de Dota was truly magical. We highly recommend visiting this hidden gem and spending more time than planned to fully experience its wonders.
