Introduction

In 2021, we embarked on a memorable journey to the cloud forests of San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica. Nestled in the Talamanca Mountains, this hidden gem is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, birdwatching opportunities, and tranquil atmosphere. Our home base for the trip was Cabinas San Gerardo, a cozy and charming accommodation that perfectly complemented the serene surroundings.

Getting There

San Gerardo de Dota is about a two-hour drive from San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. The journey takes you along the Inter-American Highway, with breathtaking views as you ascend into the mountains. We recommend checking the road conditions before traveling, as the route around Cerro de la Muerte can sometimes be closed due to landslides and weather conditions.

Located at Cabinas San Gerardo, our accommodation offered a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. The cabins were well-maintained and featured amenities that made our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Each cabin provided stunning views of the surrounding cloud forest, creating a peaceful retreat after a day of exploration.

Activities and Attractions

  1. Bird Watching: San Gerardo de Dota is a paradise for birdwatchers. The area is famous for the Resplendent Quetzal, a vibrant and elusive bird that draws enthusiasts from around the world. We spent several mornings hiking through the cloud forest, binoculars in hand, spotting various bird species including tanagers, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers.
  2. Hiking: One of the highlights of our trip was hiking to the Rio Savegre Waterfall. The trail is well-marked and takes you through lush forest and along the crystal-clear Savegre River. The hike is moderately challenging but the breathtaking waterfall at the end is well worth the effort.
  3. Los Quetzales National Park: A visit to Los Quetzales National Park is a must. The park offers numerous trails, each providing opportunities to see diverse flora and fauna. We spent an entire day exploring the park, enjoying the tranquility and natural beauty of the area.
  4. Fishing: For those interested in fishing, the Savegre River is home to fresh trout. We enjoyed a day of fly fishing, and later savored our catch prepared by a local restaurant.

  • Soda Doña Marlen: For authentic Costa Rican cuisine, Soda Doña Marlen was our go-to spot. The hearty casado and gallo pinto were delightful.
  • Alma de Arbol: This cozy restaurant provided a great selection of sandwiches, soups, and pastas, perfect for a relaxing evening meal.
